Furies Game Recap: Kunlun Red Star

Game One
Coming off a big win in Boston, the Furies were looking to keep the momentum going. Kunlun would however, inject some offence as rookie Alexandra Carpenter – USA Olympian – was added to the line up. Both teams had two power play opportunities, but it was be a showdown of the goalies. Both teams kept off the scoreboard, and despite Kunlun outshooting Toronto, the score remained 0-0 heading into the second.

It was all Kunlun in the second, as Toronto would take three undisciplined penalties. Kunlun’s rookie Carpenter capitalized on one of those power play opportunities to take the lead by one. If it weren’t for Furies third star of the night goaltender Sonja Van der Bliek the score would have been a lot higher. Van der bliek stood on her head as Toronto was out shot 17-3 in the second. The score remained 1-0 Kunlun, heading into the third.

Again, Furies goalie Van der Bliek would keep her team in the game turning down chance after chance – Toronto would head to the power play twice in the period. Despite hitting a couple of posts and a puck sitting on the goal line – Kunlun would keep the score at 1-0. It would be Kunlun’s rookie #91 Rachel Lanes that would tally her first ever CWHL career goal to put the Furies away. The final horn would sound with Kunlun taking the first game 2-0.

Just two minutes later Rookie Carpenter would add her second of the season in just two games to increase the lead to 2-0 Red Stars. Toronto battled back and outshot Kunlun 12-9 that period, but the score still remain 2-0 Red Star.

It was all Kunlun for the remainder of the game as Wong added a quick one in the second to take the lead by three. Alexandra Carpenter also added her second of the night with just three minutes remaining in the second to increase Kunlun’s lead to 4-0. There was no turning back for the Red Star’s.
