Game 2: Saturday, March 9 at 8:45 pm EST (6:45 pm MST)
Game 3 (if necessary): Sunday, March 10 at 2:00 pm EST (12:00 pm MST)
CALGARY, AB – The Furies will face tough competition in the Inferno, who head into the playoffs as the number one seed. However, the Furies are one of the hottest teams in the CWHL, clinching the last playoffs spot on the back of a five-game win streak, going 7-3 in their last ten games.
Toronto eclipsed their previous regular-season high in wins since 2010, with a young team that has a promising future.
The Inferno took the season series 4-2 against the Furies, with Toronto taking the last game 3-0, before going on their impressive tear in the back-stretch of the regular season.
Both teams boast talented rosters, with eight players on the Inferno (Decker, Rigsby and Bellamy for USA, Lacquette, Jenner, Johnston, Turnbull for Canada, and Hovi for Finland) and four on the Furies (Spooner, Fast, Nurse and Suzuki) having played at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.
Notably, captain Natalie Spooner will be lacing up the skates for the Furies, after leading her team back to the playoffs for the first time since the 2016-2017 season. Alongside her will be Olympian Renata Fast and rookie stand-out Sarah Nurse, along with national team Rivalry Series member Brittany Howard (Canada) and Team Canada alternate goalie, Shea Tiley.
For the Inferno, Brianne Decker and Rebecca Johnston will be taking the ice, both of whom participated in the NHL All-Star weekend alongside Toronto’s Renata Fast. The Inferno also have other players with National Team experience including, Krzyzaniak, Gosling, and Leslie and will be tough to beat, however, the Furies are relying on their team chemistry to push them past Calgary.
The winner of the best of three will earn a spot in the Clarkson Cup, where they will face off against the winner of the Les Canadiennes de Montreal vs Markham Thunder series, also taking place this weekend.
The Furies will be looking to bring the Clarkson Cup home for the first time since 2014 and will be hoping to do so on home ice, with the Clarkson Cup being hosted in Toronto at Coca-Cola Coliseum for the second year in a row on March 24, 2019.
