The Toronto Furies announced that forward Natalie Spooner has been named team captain for the upcoming 2016-2017 season. Spooner, 26, is entering her 5th season with the Furies and previously wore an A for the club.
Joining Spooner in appointed leadership roles are long time veteran Shannon Moulson and newly appointed assistant captains Jenelle Kohanchuk and Emily Fulton.
When asked about the selection process, General Manager Rebecca Michael had this to say “Each of these players brings something different to the table and we, as a staff, felt that was important when making the selections. Natalie has always been a leader with this team since the day she was drafted. She not only brings experience at both the club and international levels, but she has the ability to push her teammates without even knowing it”
“Shannon has been a part of this league since the inception and understands what it takes to be on the winning side. Jenelle’s ability to understand the game and be relied upon in any situation are just a few of her assets.”
When asked about the appointment of Fulton in only her second season with the team, Michael said “We felt that it was important to have someone who could understand where the first year players were coming from. Having just been in their position herself, Emily has developed as a player and person showing tremendous maturity and continuously improving her level of play.”
With the loss of three key leaders in the off-season, the Furies will be looking to these four to lead the team both on and off the ice as they work to develop a new culture within the club.
